Facebook Diet, Day 0

Today, I dropped Facebook for what I hope will be 2 weeks, if not 30 days. Frankly, I haven’t set a time limit on it. Who knows, maybe I will never go back. In the meantime, I will try to keep a brief diary here.

The point is that I have a social overload — too much social media to be concerned with. So I need to cut somethings out and FB is the biggest time waster for me. So it must be the first to go. I feel liberated already.

But I noticed one thing already: I want to post a status somewhere to tell my friends that I gave up Facebook….and that’s pretty sad.

Review of 2011

So, 2011 had good and bad points. Let’s review how it went, compared to a previous post.

Spring: Taught 3 classes. Submitted a couple of papers and a conference paper. Conference paper was accepted (HICSS). Journal papers were mixed. 1 accepted, 1 eventually rejected. Major article revision was eventually accepted. (!) I did make it to Orlando for HIMSS.

Summer: conducted research for the grant, but that is still ongoing. Revised another paper – still under review. Did not finish MISQ paper until Fall. Did not try for Belgium, but did make ISDSA conference in Detroit.

Fall: Taught 3 classes, instead of 2. Finished MISQ paper in November (rejected for Special Issue). Went to Maui instead of Shanghai. Also, became SE of Data Base and AE for MISQ Special Issue.

Bottom line: it could have been better, but it could have been a whole lot worse. Now on to a better 2012!

Ideas + Execution + Self-Discipline + Luck = Success

Ideas without action are like seeds in a jar. How many of these ungerminated ideas are floating around in your mind? Isn’t it time to plant one of them and develop it into the success that it was meant to be?

That is what 2011 will be for me. The year is filling up with opportunities to develop a number of ideas into virtual trees of knowledge. For this one year of self-discipline, I can lay a foundation on which I can build the rest of my career. All it takes is execution, self-discipline, and a little luck along the way.

Let’s go get it!

2011 – The Year on the Grind

In 2011, my gig really becomes a job! The year can be summarized by semesters, broken down by teaching (T), research (R), travel (V), and service (S).

Spring: (T) 3 classes, including 2 subjects, Tuesday and Thursday; (R) 1 major article to revise, 1 conference paper to write, 1 NSF grant proposal to write; (V) Orlando in Feb (if Grant 2 comes through).

Summer: (R) MISQ paper for November, two grants, revisions (hopefully) for earlier papers, HICSS submission (?); (S) ISDSA conference; (V) Belgium (if conf paper accepted), Detroit.

Fall: (T) 2 classes, 2 subjects. (R) Finish 2nd major manuscript (maybe others), journal revisions (hopefully); (V) maybe UGA presentation, maybe Shanghai, maybe prep for Maui in Jan, maybe none of the above.

The overall goal between today and the December 31, 2011 (12.5 months) is 2 data collection cycles, 2 grant submissions, 5-6 new journal/conference submissions, and 3 other revised submissions (not counting revisions of the other 5-6 articles). I need a vacation already.

Software for a new PC

Don’t tell my wife, but it is time for me to order a new PC. Then I will need to load software, but the problem is deciding what software to load. Here is a bit of a list of applications for me to load.

  • MS Office (of course)
  • NVivo
  • iTunes
  • SmartPLS
  • Google Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Adobe Reader
  • Skype
  • Visio

That’s a good start. I bet I’ll think of a few more apps later.

Two new books…and the weekend acquisition run

Two books that I am reading now:
1. Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue by Reed and Reed. If you like BBQ, this is a great book on one of the four classic BBQ regions.
2. The Writing Trade: A Year in the Life by Jerome. Interesting read on the business of writing. Lots of good nuggets to apply to my own writing, even as an academic.

This weekend, the Dayton Metro Library will have its annual booksale at the Hara Arena. Books for $1 or less. Be still my wallet…

Bucket List

I have posted my bucket list of the things that I want to achieve by age 50. Nothing extravagant (unless taking my wife to Hawaii counts). If you are planning and setting goals, it helps to have a few big targets to guide some of the long-term planning efforts.

I’m interested in seeing what is on other people’s lists, so feel free to add comments.

How to solve a tough problem

  1. Never accept that it can’t be solved.
  2. Understand that to solve it, you’re gonna have to break down some structural barriers.
  3. Don’t ever think the solution is going to be easy.
